Is Carrageenan (E407) halal and vegan?

A gel-forming thickener and stabiliser extracted from red seaweed. It gives plant milks, deli meats and dairy products their smooth, thick texture.

Is E407 halal?

Carrageenan is extracted from seaweed, not animals, so it is generally considered halal. The only things to watch are the processing aids or carriers used with it, and any non-halal ingredients elsewhere in the same product.

Is E407 vegan?

Carrageenan itself is plant-based (red seaweed) and therefore vegan. It is sometimes used inside non-vegan products, so check the rest of the label. Some people also choose to avoid it for digestive reasons.
